Director’s Notes about AIDA by Ms. Debbie Prost
AIDA has had an interesting “life” as a musical. The concept for AIDA started out as another animated musical film for Disney with music by Elton John and Tim Rice after their huge success with The Lion King. Elton John wanted to develop the concept into a musical instead. AIDA went from animated film idea to a Broadway Hit . It first premiered on Broadway on March 23, 2000. It was nominated for five Tony awards and won four of them for Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Leading Actress, Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting. The original Broadway Cast recording also won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2001.
But the most exciting part of AIDA’s journey was that the first full production presentation was right here at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta. At the time it premiered in 1998, it was called Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida. At the Alliance, the musical was performed, polished, tweaked and revised to its fullest potential. Then it headed to Chicago and finally on to Broadway where it ran for nearly four years.
This musical has affected me in so many ways since I first heard the soundtrack and read the script. First I was affected by the music. The music just moves you. There is no other way to say it. Of course it is Elton John and Tim Rice so that says volumes on its own. Unlike many other musicals where the songs are in addition to the story, the songs of AIDA are the heart of the story. It is through the songs that the story is told, the characters evolve and the emotions are expressed.
I was next affected by the story. This is a classic story of a forbidden but passionate and desperate love. Not only a romantic love but also a love for family, friends and country. It encompasses the struggle of duty versus the heart. It presents impossible choices and unthinkable consequences. The story of AIDA is both gut-wrenching and heart-pounding.
And lastly, I have been affected by this cast. They truly did the hard work needed to bring this script to life on stage in a way that honors the intensity of the story . I have been amazed by the maturity and passion shown in their performances.
My hope is that you are affected in a physical, emotional and spiritual way by this performance. If you feel this story deeply, then we have honored the spirit of AIDA.
